Trucking accidents: The threat of catastrophic injuries

When Tennessee motorists share the state's highways with big rigs such as 18-wheelers, semis, tractor-trailers and tankards, their lives are at risk. Even the slightest error by a truck driver -- especially at a high rate of speed -- can be catastrophic. Trucking accidents often lead to fatalities and/or life-changing injuries.

Medical malpractice: Over 4,000 "never events" occur every year

When someone in Tennessee is scheduled for surgery, anxiety is a common emotion because there are so many reports of medical errors. Researchers refer to some surgical mistakes "never events," meaning that they should never have occurred in the first place. The numbers of these mistakes are alarmingly high. More than 4,000 never events occur in surgical theaters nationwide every year, and the payouts from related medical malpractice lawsuits exceed $1.3 billion annually.

Slip-and-fall accidents in extreme cold can be fatal

In Tennessee and elsewhere, winter weather can pose various threats to personal safety. While most people take care when they walk outside, slip\-and\-fall accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. Property owners must address all known hazards that can lead to injuries by those who use their walkways and parking lots.

Action to get unsafe truckers off the road often comes too late

Driving a commercial vehicle is a demanding job. Commercial truckers operate enormous, complicated vehicles and often spend long hours and days behind the wheel. While many are able to stay alert and safe on the road, there are some who go to dangerous -- and sometimes illegal -- lengths to keep themselves awake and on-the-job.

Area hospitals are penalized for high rate of hospital-acquired illnesses.

When patients are admitted to the hospital, they seek medical treatment that will help them combat illness, not compound the effects of an ailment. For those with compromised immune systems, contracting additional infections while admitted in a facility is not a rare event. A recent report in MedCity News suggests that it is in this environment where patients may come in contact with more than the hospital staff, as preventable infections and conditions top the list of hazards patients face when they seek medical care.

Defective drugs and medical devices: The failures of IVC filters

When patients in Tennessee and elsewhere undergo surgical procedures, there will always be the danger of blood clots developing. IVC filters were intended to prevent pulmonary embolism from blood clots landing in the lungs, or even death when these clots end up in the brain. However, the devices have led to multiple lawsuits related to defective drugs and medical devices.
