Running red lights may cause serious trucking accidents

A significant number of vehicle accidents in Tennessee occur at intersections where drivers disregard traffic lights. An extensive list of precautions exists for drivers to ensure safe traveling through intersections, especially those operating trucks that need more space to come to a halt. Trucking accidents in intersections often result in fatalities of pedestrians, bicyclists or occupants of passenger vehicles.

While most drivers rely on other drivers to obey traffic signals, no red light has ever stopped a vehicle from crossing an intersection. It is up to drivers to obey the signals. All drivers must slow down when approaching a traffic light, even if it is green, rather than speeding up to rush through before it turns to red. Big rig drivers must always allow enough space to safely come to a halt if the light should turn red.

For this reason, truck drivers must have a good perception of distance, time and speed. This will allow them to determine whether they will be able to proceed safely through the intersection without causing an obstruction to cross traffic upon the change of the light. Truck drivers must also pay special attention to the potential presence of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists, who are often in their blind spots.

Any victims of trucking accidents in Tennessee may face high medical costs, some of which may be for long-term treatment of serious injuries. Furthermore, the injured person might be unable to return to work for some time, causing additional financial hardship. Recovery of financial and emotional damages is possible, but the process is challenging. However, with the experienced support and guidance of a personal injury attorney, negligence on the part of the truck driver might be established in order to convince a civil court to enter a judgment for monetary damages in favor of the plaintiff.
