What are the dangers of transvaginal mesh?

For women suffering from pelvic floor conditions like Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) or Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP), doctors may recommend a transvaginal mesh implant to strengthen the tissue. While this was once a common treatment for these conditions, women need to be aware of the many risks involved. There have been many recalls and lawsuits surrounding transvaginal mesh.

Complications

The reason for the recalls on transvaginal mesh is the number of serious health concerns associated with it. Some of the complications it can cause are very serious or possibly life-threatening. Many women found that the mesh began to erode within just a few months of the implant. In addition, it is very difficult to remove if it is causing problems. It requires many other surgical procedures.

Other effects include:

  • Pain
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Infections
  • Bleeding
  • Urinary complications
  • Organ perforation

Some women also found continued issues with SUI or POP, so the mesh did not always eliminate the original problem.

Because of the large number of women who suffered because of mesh implants, this device is now considered high risk.

Should you consider alternatives?

If a mesh implant is a possible course of action for your condition, make sure you thoroughly ask questions and consider alternatives before proceeding. Mesh is a very risky procedure that could end up harming you in the long term and costing you much more than is necessary. Other procedures may help your condition and physical therapy is a growing area of study for treating pelvic floor issues.

In the end, the choices about your body and healthcare are up to you, but you should fully research your options first.

If you already had an implant

You may have a mesh implant already. Perhaps you did not realize the risks associated with it or did not expect to face complications because of it. If you are suffering because of an implant that should have helped you instead of hurting you further, contact an attorney skilled in medical device cases. Filing a claim can allow you to collect compensation for the numerous medical bills and lost work time you have had to face. It also holds parties accountable for their actions and demands increased safety of these types of products in the future.
