Medical malpractice: A deadly threat to all Americans

Tennessee readers know that when doctors, nurses and other health care providers make mistakes, it can have serious repercussions. Medical malpractice encompasses a wide range of errors, misdiagnoses and other missteps medical professionals sometimes make. Often, it is the result of negligence or reckless behaviors by doctors, nurses and others.

A recent study proves that medical malpractice is a more serious threat than most people realize. In fact, it is one of the leading causes of death across the country. Medical mistakes lead to more time in the hospital, pain, serious complications and an enormous financial burden. Victims of malpractice have the right to seek financial compensation through a civil claim filed against the liable party, whether that is the hospital, medical practice or individual practitioner.

A troubling problem in the health care industry

Hospitals and doctor offices are supposed to be places of health and healing, but instead, they are often places of infection, further medical issues and other complications. Recent studies into medical errors and instances of malpractice revealed the following troubling statistics:

  • A recent study from Johns Hopkins concluded that 250,000 people die from errors committed by medical professionals every year.
  • Other studies have the estimate of malpractice-related deaths each year at approximately 440,000.
  • Many medical errors are the result of breakdowns in the system, including computer glitches, human error and untrained staff.

The number of deaths related to medical errors could be much higher than what some authorities actually report. This is because information gathered from death certificates do not typically account for human errors, such as medical malpractice.

You may know that medical professionals have to undergo years of training and education before they can practice medicine. However, people still make mistakes, and there are times when lesser-trained technicians are responsible for serious aspects of patient care, such as compounding medicine.

What can you do as a victim of malpractice?

As a victim of medical malpractice, you have the right to seek financial compensation through a medical malpractice claim. By seeking a complete evaluation of your case, you can obtain a better understanding of the legal options that may be available to you.

Regardless of the reason why a medical error happened, you do not have to suffer in silence. You may be able to recover your financial losses, as well as obtain money that will compensate you for your pain and suffering. Victims of medical malpractice of all kinds have the right to stand up for their interests and recovery.
