Medical malpractice: Surgical error leads to amputations

Many individuals in Tennessee and elsewhere may view the thought of undergoing even a minor surgical procedure with some level of concern. Although surgeons endure years of studying and training in their respective fields to prepare for future operations, unfortunately, all it takes is one error to leave a patient with life-altering injuries. A woman in another state has recently filed a medical malpractice lawsuit after a recent surgical error led to the need to amputate her hands and feet.

According to reports, the incident began when the woman was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy. Following this diagnosis, doctors recommended she undergo a procedure to remove her fallopian tube. According to the lawsuit, an error during the procedure left her with a small hole in her bowel that went undetected for up to two days.

After becoming aware of the condition, another surgery was performed to repair the hole. However, complications from the condition caused her to suffer sepsis and gangrene in her hands and feet. After undergoing several surgeries, medical professionals were forced to amputate her hands and her legs below the knee. The lawsuit also states that these mistakes will cause her to experience digestive issues for the remainder of her life.

Surgical errors run the risk of causing a person's existing issues to worsen, or even creating additional health concerns that should be entirely avoidable. Individuals who experience such harm could be entitled to restitution, and they may choose to speak with an experienced attorney for assistance in navigating the process. An attorney in Tennessee can assist a client in pursuing the full amount of compensation deserved through a medical malpractice claim against the party or parties deemed culpable.
