Sharing the road with distracted drivers during the holidays

The holidays are a busy time of year. In November and December, there is a sharp increase in the number of drivers who are on the roads for various reasons, including traveling to see family, going to parties, shopping trips and much more. When the number of vehicles on the road increases, it will naturally increase the number of accidents as well.

Another factor that could lead to an increase in the number of accidents this time of year is distracted driving. Simply put, more drivers means more distraction. Additionally, there are various factors unique to the season that could make already distracted drivers even more unfocused. This may be a sobering thought to you and other Tennessee motorists who simply want to arrive at their destination safely.

More distraction in December?

Common reasons for distracted driving include phone use, driving with passengers, adjusting the radio, inputting information in a GPS system and more. The holidays make it more likely that drivers will engage in dangerous behavior, including phone use behind the wheel. Fortunately, there are new ways for drivers to track their habits and make safer choices.

A company has developed a particular application that can allow drivers to see how much they use their phones and do other things while driving. It can help people see how truly distracted they are and build better habits. This is particularly timely because distracted driving is an ever-growing concern -- one that can be even more problematic during the holidays. Consider the following:

  • Statistics and estimates suggest that distracted driving will increase by as much as 33 percent during the holiday season.
  • More people are traveling during the holidays, which means they may be more likely to text loved ones to give them updates along the way.
  • People are also more likely to drive at increased speeds during the holidays, leading to a greater chance of an accident.

Every driver is responsible for the choices he or she makes behind the wheel, whether that is during the holidays or during any other time of year.

Your options as an accident victim

If you are a victim of distracted driving and suffering the physical and financial consequences, you have options. Victims often feel helpless and overwhelmed after a crash, but you do not have to navigate this difficult time on your own. You deserve a complete evaluation of your case, which may reveal that you have grounds to pursue financial compensation through a civil claim.
